Purpose: to increase knowledge of deforestation and the negative effects it has on our planet and everything on it.
Facts about the Rainforest
The rainforests of the world are incredibly important. They contain resources critical for many people. One-fifth of the world's fresh water is found in the Amazon Basin, so keeping our rainforests is vital. Also don't forget one of the most important roles trees and other plants play, humans take in oxygen and produce carbon dioxide while trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. They are our partners. Trees are vital to the continued life of all species. Yet some do not realize that while the human population is increasing the amount of trees and rainforests is decreasing, which will eventually create a very large problem if not remedied. Originally, 6 million square miles of tropical rainforest existed worldwide. But as a result of deforestation, only 2.6 million square miles remain. Every second, a slice of rainforest the size of a football field is chopped down. That's 86,400 football fields of rainforest per day, or over 31 million football fields of rainforest each year. This devastation could be prevented if forests green coloring would be regarded as a beauty of nature instead of a source of money.
The Effects of Deforestation
70% of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, that is a lot of living things. When we destroy a rainforest we may be destroying the only place in the world a plant or animal species lives in. About 50 to 100 species of animals are being lost each day. Deforestation affects soil by causing soil erosion. Soil erosion happens when there is no longer any vegetation to hold down soil and prevent it from washing away. This makes it hard for plants to grow in the remaining soil that is stripped of nutrients. Trees are vital to many things including the water cycle. Trees get water from the ground then they transpire that water which turns into clouds. The absence of trees also contributes to the dreaded global warming. Since trees that take in carbon dioxide have been cut down, that greenhouse gas has increased, and has in turn increased global warming.
Ways to Help Reduce the Impact of Deforestation
-Recycle.
-Plant trees of your own.
-Spread the word about deforestation.
-Decrease the use of paper and tree byproducts, use alternatives.
-Support and/or join environmentally friendly programs and groups, they are trying to help the enviroment.
-Choose recycled products when given the choice.
-Speak up to legislators.

Goals
Goal #1: to educate citizens on the planetwide atrocity, deforestation.
Goal #2: to show through the photo gallery what is being destroyed for monetary gain.
Goal #3: to provide ways for people to assist the environment.
